Alexa Riley's books are pure escapism for me. They're not realistic, there's not much character development, and in most of their books, there's not even much plot. But I enjoy them anyway. Shielding Lily is probably one of my favorite of Riley's books that I've read so far. On the sweet to smutty spectrum, this one is definitely off the charts sweet--but fear not, it's got plenty of dirty parts to keep you happy, too.Lily is a high school senior who has just transferred to a new school in the middle of the year. After the tragic death of Lily's mother, Lily's father has become a raging alcoholic. Lily is the image of her mother and it's slowly driving her father mad, causing him to lash out at Lily, physically and verbally abusing her. Lily just wants to finish school and find a job so that she can escape the hell of living with her father.
Ren is the star quarterback at Lily's new school. He already has a full ride football scholarship, so his future is set. He has loving parents, but despite being the golden boy athlete, Ren doesn't really have friends and tends to keep to himself. Something is definitely missing from his life.
When Ren meets Lily, it's safe to say that it's love at first sight. Ren is drawn to Lily's vulnerability in a way that makes him need to protect her. There's no sense or logic to it; it's pure instinct. Lily isn't sure what to make of Ren at first, but soon realizes that he has sincere intentions. She knows that she can trust him.
As is the standard with Riley, the couple falls for each other fast. At first, Lily's more hesitant because she doesn't want love to destroy her the way that it has with her father. But Ren quickly convinces Lily that he only wants to protect and care for her.
There were some things I didn't like: for example, just how quickly Lily and Ren go from both being virgins to having amazing, mind-blowing sex. Also, the numerous epilogues were a bit tedious for me.
Having said all that, as insta-lovey and unrealistic as this book is, I still liked it. There are moments when Ren is so darn sweet that I was actually smiling at some of the things he says to Lily. Here I was, reading this book, smiling like an idiot. This book is sweet enough to warm even my cynical heart.
It's kind of hard to believe that this is the same writing team that brought us Trailer Park Virgin (because that book was filthy to the max), but there you have it. I'd especially recommend Shielding Lily to readers who might be new to Alexa Riley and aren't ready to dive into their taboo books just yet. Loyal readers might still enjoy this, but just be aware that this isn't a full-on smutfest like most of their other books.

Sometimes the writing team of Alexa Riley writes funny. Sometimes they write sweet. Sometimes they write raunchy. They always write over-the-top.
This time they wrote a beautiful love story. The characters, Lily and Ren, are YA but the story doesn't feel young; it's almost timeless.
Lily is smart, shy and kind. No spoilers, but I will say her home life is awful. On her first day at a new school, she meets Ren. Ren is not the average teenage football player. He's quiet, a little bit of a loner, smart and kind. He comes from a great family where the parents are involved, but respect his decisions. He immediately falls for Lily. Their relationship is emotionally serious from the start, but they take their time with the physical aspects. Even though it's instalove, it feels romantically believable.
There is explicit language and sex in the book, so be warned if you're offended by it. This is a safe read with no cheating and no OW/OM drama.
I absolutely recommend this book. I bought it when it first came out and have re-read it several times. I think it's my favorite Alexa Riley book so far and that says something considering I one click anything they write without even reading the synopsis.
Don't miss this beautiful love story.
I read P.S... You're Mine a few days ago and absolutely loved. After reading Shielding Lily, I'm torn between the two.
Shielding Lily is a puppy love romance. Ren and Lily are wise beyond their years. Ren is studious and athletic. He could care less about his popularity. He just wants to be successful and have a love like his parents. Lily hasn't had a home since her mother's death. She lost both parents that day and now she's trying to save money so that she can leave home and go to college. When Ren really sees Lily for the first time, his world lights up. He's found something that brings him passion and happiness. Lily hasn't felt loved and protected for so long. She takes a leap of faith letting Ren into her world. Together the couple grow and encourage each other to follow their dreams. Their sole purpose in life is make the other happy, as their love's happiness makes them happy.
It's a sweet and romantic read following Ren and Lily from high school seniors to adulthood. Shielding Lily is all about finding love, family and happiness. If you've never read an AR book, this would be a perfect start.
I absolutely loved this story!!!! This story could almost be categorized as young adult but it is explicit. It fits within the new adult category for sure. Lily and Ren are in their last semester of high school. Lily is starting out at a new school and she meets Ren on the first day. He is immediately drawn to her and knows she's it for him. Lily has that instant connection as well and can feel the protective bubble that he creates around her. This story is so sweet!! The characters drew me in from the very beginning and they just melted my heart! This story doesn't have the same dirty, sexy explicit side to it that most of Alexa Riley's books have. It's a little different, a little sweeter and verging a little on the innocent side. It totally fits the characters! It absolutely still has Alexa Riley in it and you can tell. The sex and story is still explicit and you still have that dirty talk but the characters just needed a little bit of a different vibe and Alexa Riley delivers! I loved the sweet innocence that they delivered with the characters and story mixed with their insta-love and sexy times. This story is a little bit longer as well, which I absolutely loved! This was just really well done and I highly recommend it! I hope they write more with this vibe along with their other stories!
